I saw the same problem in the most recent Best American Short Story annual: choices based on the guest editor's personal quirks and agendas. The Ghorayshi BuzzFeed article ("He Fell in Love with His Grad Student--Then Fired her for It") simply doesn't belong in this kind of collection. Its 4.5 pages vilify a research mentor who never gets to represent himself in the article. Of course, in the court of third-wave feminism, he's always-already guilty anyway. It might have been an interesting inquiry into what happens when a zealous researcher gets frustrated when one of his mentees doesn't share his passion for science and how he terminates their professional relationship when he decides that his affection for her may be the reason for her tepid enthusiasm. Or we could learn more about why talented researchers don't always make good mentors, especially when they aren't trained. Or why the woman's friend maintains a 22-month correspondence with the mentor and then turns against him in the harassment case. It's bad journalism and worse science--no comparison of competing viewpoints, no in-depth inquiry, no balance, no objectivity. Two entries later is a long narrative essay on a sexual harassment experience that takes place in the bottom of the Grand Canyon. This should be in the Best American Essays collection. I learn nothing about science or nature from it, and I don't buy that it defines the nature of testosterone or patriarchy. The essay about the Santa Ana winds is my favorite for showing how myth shades our understanding of natural phenomena and how nature operates indifferently to myth. Yet we remain, nonetheless, myth-making creatures. Many poems have been written about the austere indifference of ye olde nature, but this essay locates it in a mythical place--Los Angeles--and at least implies that cities will continue to mythologize the winds and rains and earthquakes and floods that befall them.Other essays are rather quirky magazine pieces for reading while waiting to see the dentist.

I have read every edition of this series since it started. Recent editions have had less and less actual science, and more generic human interest stories. This new low will be my final purchase. It started hopefully, but then descended into human interest stories and outright gossip. After 300 pages I have learned very little about the universe around us, but a lot about the personal lives of a bunch of people of no great import.

I did not know these annuals existed. Great reading for those of us who love science but aren’t scientists.

College student reviewBook is exactly as it’s described. Used this in my English 101 STEM course. The stories aren’t that great but for in class discussions and essays it’s pretty decent. I would buy the 2018 one if possible this version is not the best for “ the best science and nature writing”. Good luck

I buy this book yearly. It keeps me current on many topics.

Great variety of pertinent articles for our time

This series is always excellent for bringing together new ideas and authors. Jahren herself is an inspiration.

Every story is interesting and well written. Nice to have some short stories for quick reads between novels.
