A great intro to radical feminism. I would definitely pass this on to other men and women interested in learning more. I highly suggest those who found this book helpful to read Jensen's book, Getting Off, for an even more strong and incredibly deep analysis. Although I loved The End of Patriarchy, I wish Jensen spent more time diving into the topics in greater length and detail! I think the beginning chapters had too many prefaces and qualifiers. I understand why- as a man speaking on feminism, he must tread carefully... but I felt like the extent he went to smooth the transition was unnecessary, repetitive, and even detracted from his powerful arguments. This comprised half the book. It wasn't until the last half of the book that he really got into the "meat" of radical theory. Jensen is terribly humble, almost to a fault! Jensen has a lot of important things to say and has an incredibly strong and articulate voice. We need more of his analysis... and without apology!

University professor and writer Robert Jensen sees his role relative to feminism as speaking to men. He understands that feminist women have done amazing work. He is particularly appreciative of Andrea Dworkin. Having become a feminist by learning from her and other women he wants to interpret those understandings to other men. He says that patriarchy begins in men’s claims to own women’s bodies, especially reproduction and sexuality and that the two oldest oppressions, patriarchy and human domination of the world, share the pathological belief that we can own things. He sees no human future in capitalism, as it is premised on the market and the ownership of all. Jensen notes that patriarchy is a relatively recent development. In the 200,000 years of our species only about the last 6,000 years have been hierarchical or male-dominated. He sees it connected to the agricultural revolution. In his chapter on the culture of rape and violence Jensen emphasizes the need to appropriately socialize young men. He sees pornography as part of the patriarchal culture and as destructive of men’s humanity. In discussing sexual exploitation he raises and answers an important question: What is sex for? I recommend this book for both men and women.

Author Robert Jensen bravely shared a bold deliberation on the insidious impacts of patriarchy that permeates every society, from appalling violence to complicit silence or implicit acceptance in the mass cultures. This book is an invitation for both men and women to reflect and examine together the deep-seeded issues that plague our world with greed, wars and strife. As I also write—through fictional tales, and care deeply on the subject of healing the wounds between the genders, I highly recommend to anyone to read this book, to keep opening up honest dialogues between the sexes, to sustain guiding the next generations toward newer paths of awakening, and be vigilant in not wanting to perpetuate the behaviors of control, mutual manipulation or dominance. Aside from victimized situations, women who consciously or subconsciously submit to patriarchy are as responsible as men in maintaining the status quo. We each need to commit to unravel this collective shadow in order to usher in higher octaves of harmony. The imbedded programming through the millennia into male and female conducts need to be compassionately divulged and invite radical changes.I appreciate the examination in this book, but I would have liked to see Jensen explore deeper into the many shades of the hazardous games of patriarchy, and delve further into the profound aspects of radical feminism for both genders. The first half of the book contained too long of semantics and qualifiers, only in the second half did Jensen earnestly analyze the ills of the patriarchal psyche. Nonetheless, a clear male voice in this kind of fearless analysis is encouraging for a better future of humanity. We each need to do our part to help bring this to the forefront for transmutation to happen.Jacqueline Sa, author of Exultation: Erotic Tales of Divine Union

I'm very glad to have read this book. I found many of the author's arguments compelling and I think he does an excellent job of depicting the scale and scope of patriarchal forces and making a strong case for a radical approach to systemic change.I'm also glad to have finally read a detailed TERF position on transgender people so rather than simply believing that TERFs are bigots I can now say that I also believe they are wrong (or at least, the author is). While I can imagine that in a world free of externally-defined and imposed binary gender definitions in which from birth every person can explore and express their unique gender identity, transgender people would almost certainly suffer less (indeed, everyone would), that is a futuristic fantasy and there is no way to test the assumption that in the absence of patriarchy there would be no transgender people. We cannot ignore that at this very moment, transgender people exist and many of them are struggling and suffering. In the absence of an understanding of the biological and psychological underpinnings of their individual experiences I can't see in the author's writing any justification for denying them the right to define who they are and to seek to express themselves in whichever way best addresses their needs. The closest thing to an argument the author seems to have is that calling a transgender woman a woman reinforces binary gender definitions imposed by the patriarchy, but I am not about to criticize a woman for doing what she has to do to exist in the present world. There are better ways to attack patriarchy that don't harm its most vulnerable victims. As for the SWERF accusations, I'm willing to take the author at his word that one can attack predatory labor practices without demonizing the victims, but I did not feel that he made an effort to assert or enforce the inherent dignity of sex workers or to address the injustice of the social stigma that they bear.
