Tom Rosenbauer is a lifelong fly fisher and has been named 2011 Angler of the Year by Fly Rod & Reel Magazine. Tom Rosenbauer's Orvis fly fishing guides are generally pretty good books. This one is no exception, notwithstanding the fact that it represents somewhat of a departure.The format of Small Stream Fly Fishing crosses over from information guide to coffee table book. It is large, hard covered, and filled with big (in some cases full page and even two page spreads) color photographs. The price is bumped up accordingly - this one is 35 bucks, about $ 10 more than others in the series.Is it worth it? Depends what you're looking for.Rosenbauer provides a solid overview of targeting trout in tiny waters and does a good job describing the particular charm of this kind of fishing. After reading it, assuming that you have basic fishing skills, you'll be ready to venture out and give it a try. And during those long winter months, leafing through the book and looking at the pictures will be a pleasurable pastime to help fend off cabin fever.But if you're looking for a lot of advanced technical information, Trout From Small Streams by Dave Hughes might be a better fit.
At first, I thought that I would find a lot of repetitive info, because I have read a lot of books from the same author, but I was wrong, as there is a very fresh approach to the subject. Excellent information, to the point, and I must say very practical, I was able to put into practice a lot of tips from the book just a few days after buying it, with excellente results. Also, makes clear a lot of myths regarding small stream fishing, like the need of puny diminutive tackle for this kind of fishing.The photography is first rate, too. And, HURRA!!!, no wasted space on general subjects like casting basics. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.
I teach trout fishing to children and adults, and I recommend this book wholeheartedly to someone who wants to learn small stream fishing. Tom Rosenbauer is a definitive expert on reading trout water and tactics, and his easy and open writing style paints a vivid picture for fishermen, from novice to experienced. I have fly fished for trout in rivers and small streams for 25 years now, and Tom Rosenbauer books have been with me for much of that journey. As a student of the sport, you can read and reread this books and gain insights as you develop skills and a base of on-water experience.
This book is very well written and layed out, has good pictures on it an drives you to through the path on small creek fishing. Not fer very beginner fly fisherman, you need to know at least the basics (equipment, casting, knots) to fully enjoy this book. It has great pictures in it too!.I'm an ultra light fly fishing enthusiast who enjoy fly fishing in small creeks and I really liked the book.
Somehow they took a small streams fly fishing guide and condensed his entire being into book form. After reading this I feel like I have gained months of hard-earned experience on the stream without getting my feet wet. Time now to put some of that to use with a fly, some clouds, and peace-giving solitude.Aside from imparting tremendous advice the pictures are worthy of any good coffee-table book.
Tom does a great job giving those little hints that make a huge difference. If you are fishing on larger rivers than small streams, my favorite book of his is "prospecting for trout." Fantastic read for any beginner to moderate fly fisherman.
This is only the second of Rosenbauer's books I have read and I can't say enough about it. It is fun to read and the pictures are inspiring. This book has caused me to look at streams in a new way. I highly recommend it!
Rosenbauer's books are always worth reading, even though there is a lot of repetition from one book to the next. Each book stands alone, however, and each does contain distinct information about the topic discussed.
