I love this entire series. This was a deeper, more thoughtful portrayal of the characters. I like them even more. Her stories are always interesting and entertaining. Amazing that even after 10 books the characters and events are strong and surely written. I've already preordered the next!
Violet, Jack, Victor and their whole family of friends are pulled into another mystery first of arson, and then murder. Violet and Jack put an offer on a home and plan more of their future. The strong friendships and support amongst the friends are highlighted. Could have been edited better.
This is a fun series. Not hard to solve but excellent characters who i love to read about.
A little different from some of the books in this series but still a fun and light read.
The time period piece with historical reference and fashion descriptions makes a fun light read. The feminist lead is a delight even as she battles the sexism of the period. The male characters are rather stereotypical, however.
Much like heroine Lady Violet, this series has a surface froth with a depth of issues underneath.In this volume we learn more about Vi's friend Denny, husband of her best friend Lila, and his complex relationship with his brother Wendell.Several of the series regulars also deal with aspects of PTSD after dealing with the Norris of WWI and events surrounding murders yet they work hard for normalcy and happiness.In this book Wendell, a young archaeologist, is a leading suspect in the death of his professional benefactor, a man who is actually undermining the reputations of the men who run his digs for him, including moving Mayan obsidian blades to finds on the other side of the world to try to prove his bizarre theories.
I love this silly series and the twins are facing the first of several upcoming changes. Violet has the blues because her brother is honeymooning and Jack is working a case far away. She wonders what this means for her future and what it says about her as a woman - can she not be alone? In part to cheer her and in part to help her brother-in-law, Lila gives her a case about chronic arson and a disreputable misogynistic archaeology funder like Howard Carter but a dilettante. To advance the case they all attend a Guy Fawkes party and of course someone ends up dead. Fun mystery but great character developments.
In the last book Violet & Victor’s family — father, brothers etc were part of the story. Previously they were just in the background. They are a great addition. In this book there are even more family and families of friends introduced. There are life changes: Kate’s pregnancy, Jack & Violet buy a house, four orphans are adopted by everyone and will live with Kate’s mother. The mystery is intentionally not as exciting as usual ......everyone agrees they just want to solve it so they can get on with their new lives. It will be exciting to see the next book with the new additions & hopefully a more complex murder!!
