I especially liked the opening chapter, which got my attention by simulating a situation which described a disaster. In this case, it was about the ill prepared hunter who went out in the woods and the weather turned bitterly ed. He was not prepared for the cold, nor did he have the emergency equipment needed for survival through the night. (He had also gotten lost, and was without compass or radio.)This was a good segue into the remaining chapters, on how to deal with various situations we might encounter in the wilderness. A list of things to carry on every outing, being prepared for the worst, because it can happen to every one of us!This book is a must have for any one who enjoys the outdoors, who hunts or fishes or camps or hikes.
Great shipping. Great condition. As far as survival guide and details?...not so much. I still have to give 5 stars because essentially there is nothing wrong with the book itself. I have just found way better books that have step by step instructions and tools. Thought this book was going to be that as well and it was not. He does a lot of short answer explaining about different regions, how to be prepared in those regions and so on, but not in depth. There are many other books that allow for skills training on surviving/survival. If you are looking for that then this book is not for you. I suggest primitive skills books, shelter building, and field guide type books. All the best!
I've had this product for a couple of weeks. Read it all through and through. The illustrations are easy to comprehend. The way it is written is also simple and detailed. For anynone that is looking for the perfect book in wilderness survival this is it. It would have been nice though to get just a little more of a preview of each section before I purchased it just so I know what I was getting myself into. This is my third survival book that I've gotten off of Amazon.com and this is the only one that is as detailed and thorough on wilderness survival. In the book I like the fact that the author gives you man-made solutions and mother nature solutions. Overall I was pleased with my purchase. I would also check out the Encyclopedia of Wild Edible Plants of North America, I haven't received it yet but from the preview it seems like a thorough book.
When building a library for on the move camping/survival, do not forget this resource. Excellent coverage on "how to's" planning, building and sustaining shelters and finding resources to survive. Pack able size,to refer often to things you should know but often forget. Great illustrations on shelters and traps. Some guidance on edible plant ID yet I would recommend additional resource on that. Excellent go to manual.
A great read. the only objection or fault I could find is that the author didn't give more detail on the weather when it goes way below zero. I mean like -40 for example.
The tone of this book is great - no bragging, no grandstanding. Good information that covers not only practical skills but also useful commentary on the psychological aspects of a survival situation. Covers many climates so it's relevant to most anyone.
There's a reason so many people consider this the gold standard of survival manuals. Everything you need to know, and nothing you don't. It could be a shorter, more readable book, if all the repetition was eliminated, but it wouldn't be any clearer or more useful.
