This book is more than a decade old, but still very useful as a discussion on transformative leaning, although this is a very polemic term. It’s surprising that a ecumenical group holds together to foster such an hard content, publishing texts with high degree of dissent, and mixing methodic rigor with educational aims, especially critical citizenship. The group is led by Mezirow who receives both great acknowledgement and questionings. Some problems do origin from Habermas’s background (communicative action theory without sufficient sense for power [or strategic] problems), others come from a weak inclusion of practice in the theory, others still pertain to a excessively analytical, rational approach, as if transformation should be a linear progress… Nevertheless, the texts include in the book represent a very nice group, from which we can learn a lot.
