It was very convenient to have the flash cards that are tied in to Mounce's Grammar for Biblical Greek. The first 343 words or so are keyed into the book's chapters, and then beyond that (345-1000) cover all words that occur 10 times or more in the New Testament. These flashcards were helpful in that I didn't have to take the time to make my own flashcards. However, the flash cards do not include what the root of the word is; a piece of information that I was constantly thinking about when learning new vocabulary words. It was also hard to keep so many cards organized. When you buy the book (Basics of Biblical Greek) the author directs you to his website (www.teknia.com). On this website there is a flashcard software (FREE) that I found I used more than these physical flashcards for the accessibility. You can select which chapters you want to review and you can shuffle the words as well. So, while these flashcards are nice, the software almost makes them obsolete (unless you really like the physical version).

I recommend these cards, but there are some things that you need to know about that are important. Please note if you buy these cards:1. These flashcards do NOT cover all words that occur 10 times or more in the NT. It is claimed several times by people writing reviews here, and it is NOT true that they cover all the words that occur 10 times or more in the NT. They basically cover all words 12 times and more, NOT 10 times or more. For words included 12 times or more there are 66 words (card #s 913-979). For words that occur 11 times or more in the NT this flashcard set has only 13 words (card #s 980-992). Metzger includes 76 words that occur 11 times each in the NT. For words that occur 10 times in the NT, this set includes only 8 words (#s 993-1000). Metzger again has 76 words for words occurring 10 times in the NT.And, of the 21 words this set gives for words occurring 10 or 11 times in the NT, they are not very useful, since they are words most would recognize without ever studying Greek vocabulary (e.g., κλητος/η/ον, κλησις, ζηλοω, ψευδος, ψευστης), or they are words you would know because you already learned the noun, adjective, verb form of the word way before now (e.g., θανατοω, σπλαγχνα, ἁγιασμος, or, for some, the words included above). Anyone who knows Greek will tell you that you must keep your vocabulary fresh. If you buy these to review and to keep your vocabulary fresh, you will have to buy blank cards like I did and make your own for words used 11 times or less.2. They are very difficult to flip. They are not printed to flip the natural way. I would hope that the next time these are printed this will be fixed for future users. My wife says I should go through and write them on the card the right way. I may.3. They do not include roots for the verbs. This is a serious, serious omission, and Mounce himself says as much in BBG (see chapter 20 in his BBG; see also his MBG). He includes the root in BBG for all words occurring over 50 times in the NT, but his lexicon at the back of BBG includes all words occurring over 10 times in the NT. Why doesn’t he include the roots to all verbs in his lexicon, including the verbs occurring 10-49 times in the NT and which are in his lexicon? He knows how important they are. But for a person who correctly teaches that roots must be memorized with the lexical form of verbs, and for a person who says “I hate memorizing words, especially principal parts” (Mounce in MBG), why he didn’t include the roots to this set is beyond me. I have to write them on the card myself. If you don’t know the importance of memorizing the root of a verb along with the verb, you are probably a beginner, and you will learn the importance of such. Again, read Mounce himself on the importance of memorizing the root of every verb. That all said, for those three reasons I gave this flashcard set a 4 star rating. I would hope that he will fix #2 and #3 with the next printing, but in the description of the features for this set let people know that it only goes down to words used 12 times or more in the NT (#1 above). It’s misleading, imo, to see frequency numbers included on the card that say 10 times and 11 times, because it is only natural to think that ALL words occurring 10 or 11 times are included in this set and it just so happens that it works out to be 1,000 NT words even. How convenient, since only 1,000 cards will fit in the box!

In order to transfer into a Bible program, I needed to pass a 1st year Greek exam based on Mounce. 10 years ago, I took 2 semesters of classical Greek, and since then had tried and failed to learn Biblical Greek on my own using Machen and Vine. This book was a delight to go through. I had the 1st edition, but quickly switched to the second edition because there was no online answer key. I used the textbook in conjunction with the workbook, the flashcards, and the "cheat sheet". Just this past week, I easily passed my entrance exam, so I can confidently say that this text works!Mounce's style is engaging, informal, and lighthearted at times. This is great relief when your brain is fried from trying to lean paradigms. I really enjoyed how he kept the proper motivation in front of me at all times. I am learning Greek to better understand God's word, not just to pass a test or increase knowledge. This text is heavy on pattern recognition, not brute memorization. I found this incredibly helpful. I have no complaints about the amount (or lack) of vocabulary, or the fact that nouns and verbs are divided up.If you are trying to learn Greek on your own, you need to have at least the 2nd edition. You need to get the workbook as well. Parsing and translating is how Greek gets into your brain, not just reading the textbook. I found the flashcards very helpful, and I referenced the cheat sheet now and then. I never used the accompanying cd.You can learn Greek on your own, using this book!

Using flashcards is almost indispensable to learning a language, and Greek is no exception. In the past I have made my own, but I decided to buy this set and save myself some time. I am really glad I did! It contains all the vocabulary down to 10+ uses. I only used the first 1/3 in working through my first year book, so this will serve me well for several more years to come.Writing out vocabulary can be useful to learning it, and in those cases where I just wasn't getting it right away, I did write it out in a notebook. Just because you have printed cards doesn't mean you can't still write. I did end up writing some things on the cards, and creating my own cards for certain things. In the textbook, Mounce suggests making a card for each case of a preposition (dia + genetive, dia + accusative, etc.). There is only one printed card for 'dia'. He also suggests making separate cards for the 2nd aorist forms, so these too I had to make for myself. There were no cards for the 'eimi' forms, and I noticed some the vocabulary was out of order between chapters 10 and 11 of the 2nd edition of the textbook. That said, those are very small complaints in light of the tremendous help this set of flashcards has been and will continue to be. I definitely recommend this set!
